A life begins in one of 172 countries. Birthplace, family circumstances, choices and chance shape the years that follow. The game combines a statistical starting point with fictional characters and events. Play in a modern desktop or mobile browser with JavaScript enabled. No game download or account is required to start. Game and keepsake features are free. ## What can you do in the game? - Choose a starting era, demographic weighting and lifetime pace before birth. - Advance through education, work, relationships, family, health and financial decisions. - Follow children and later generations as their lives develop. - Keep birth cards, life records, pixel artwork, albums and other available exports. - Save lives locally, transfer a backup and choose whether to publish a memorial. ## Languages and access The game has ten language entry points: English, Korean, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, French, Thai, Spanish and German. Choose an era, birthplace weighting and lifetime pace in Before you are born. Enable Gentler mode or Classroom mode if wanted. 3. Select Be born. Read the birth card and choose Begin this life. 4. Read the life record and current statistics. Use Play, Pause, Next decision or Next year to control progression. 5. Resolve available decisions or reflection pauses. Review health, knowledge, relationships and money as the years change. 6. At the end of a life, review its story and available keepsakes. Use Move my lives to export a backup before changing devices. ## How chance and choices work Babies born now weights birthplace by annual births; The 8 billion alive now weights it by population; Equal country chances gives every included country the same initial weight. These are different sampling choices, not different difficulty guarantees. Your annual focus and decisions influence probabilities and opportunities. Higher statistics do not guarantee admission, employment, a relationship or survival. Available actions depend on age, country, education, money and the current life state. Children outside school may do paid work or help their family without pay. That status persists through saving and reloading; paid childhood work uses a small share of the national lower-income distribution, while unpaid work earns no wages. ## Control the pace Automatic progression can pause for a decision. Resolve the choice or use the available pause/reflection controls before expecting time to continue. Auto mode can make future choices for you; use manual decisions when you want to choose the direction yourself. A planned lifetime pace does not guarantee a character will reach a certain age. A life can end early. Gentler mode reduces early mortality and distressing events; Classroom mode also disables personal publishing. ## Read the life record The life record explains important events and decisions. Other panels show family, country statistics, life map, finances and keepsakes as they become available. A disabled action may require another age, sufficient savings or the resolution of a current decision. The simulation can include poverty, illness, intensive care, loss and death. It is intended for ages 15 and older. The game and all keepsake features on 1in8bn.com are free. You do not need a paid keepsake pass. ### Do I need an account or a download? No account or game download is required to start. Open the site in a modern browser with JavaScript enabled. Saved lives normally remain on that device. ### How many countries can a life start in? The game includes 172 countries. Birthplace odds depend on whether you choose annual births, population or equal country weighting. ### Can I play on a phone? Yes, the game supports touch controls and responsive mobile pages. Some media export formats depend on browser capabilities, so every download format is not guaranteed on every phone. ### How do I move a saved life to another device? Use Move my lives to export a backup, then import it in the destination browser. Export the destination lives first: importing replaces lives stored on that device. Automatic cross-device synchronization is not provided. ### Can adult children work, marry, leave home or migrate? Adult descendants can develop jobs, relationships, households and migration events as a life progresses. Some events offer a family decision; others happen through the simulation. Relationships, births, separations, loss and new households can appear in the life record. Children and grandchildren have their own age, circumstances and events rather than remaining fixed as children throughout your life. Read the newest family events and open the family panel to understand who is living with whom. Family formation and residence can change; a past event records what happened at that time and may differ from the current household. ## Work, marriage, leaving home and migration Adult descendants can study, work, form relationships, marry, move out or migrate when their circumstances allow it. Country, age, education, finances and existing family state affect the available paths. Grandchildren can also reach adulthood and develop later-life events. The player sometimes receives a family decision about a descendant. Review the named person, choices and any charge before responding. Not every life generates every event, and supporting a choice does not guarantee its eventual outcome. ## Use the event record for context - Check the person named in the event; a child’s decision and a grandchild’s decision can have different effects. - Work, relationships and household location are separate parts of a person’s life. - Resolve a pending choice before trying to advance time. - A changed location or relationship does not retroactively rewrite an earlier family memory. ## Simulation limits Family events are fictional and simplified. The game does not model every legal, cultural or immigration process. A migration event is a game outcome, not a real visa route or promise that a country will admit someone. Country statistics provide context, but a character’s outcome is not a personal forecast. A high health value does not guarantee a long life. A life can include illness, clinical findings, treatment, recovery and death. Read the event description and choices for the current episode instead of assuming that all health events work the same way. ## Intensive-care episodes Some severe health events can lead to an ICU episode. The game can offer decisions about care and treatment. Costs, available choices and outcomes depend on the current life and the event being simulated. Paying for care does not guarantee survival. The life record and ending explain the simulated result. These mechanics are entertainment and reflection; they are not diagnostic tools, treatment guidance or a substitute for real medical care. ## Choose gentler play Before starting a new life, Gentler mode reduces early mortality and distressing events. Classroom mode provides gentler play and disables personal publishing. These settings do not promise that a life will contain no illness, loss or death. Language: English. ## Keep a backup of local lives Lives and written reflections are normally saved in the current browser on the current device. They are not automatically copied to another browser, phone or computer. Private browsing and browser storage restrictions can make saves temporary or unavailable. Use Move my lives to export a backup before clearing site data, changing devices or importing another save. Importing replaces the lives on the destination device, so export that device’s lives first. If a save has already been deleted and there is no backup, recovery is not guaranteed. ## Free keepsakes and pixel artwork Depending on the life stage, available keepsakes include a birth card, life story, life record, pixel artwork, album, film or teaser tools and print/PDF options. All game and keepsake features are free. Export formats depend on browser support. Some recording or media formats may work differently on a phone and a desktop. Keep the save backup as well as any pictures or video; an image export is not a transferable game save. ## Publish only what you intend to share Public memorials and rooms are optional. Publishing sends the selected life summary and associated public content to the site’s dedicated community database. Other visitors can view published content and use available memorial interactions. Written reflections remain local unless you choose to include them. Review the publishing options and preview. Avoid personal information in names, messages and uploaded or written content. Removal controls require the ownership information retained by the publishing browser; contact support if you need help. Classroom mode disables personal publishing. ## Embedding and storage Another site can embed the public game URL in an iframe. Third-party notices record this snapshot and the applicable license. The reference repository identifies UN World Population Prospects 2024, World Bank WDI, WHO, UNESCO UIS, UNDP HDR, ILO, UNAIDS, UNODC, UNICEF and the World Happiness Report 2024 as statistical sources. This site uses the reference snapshot; it does not claim a new live verification of every underlying indicator. ## Birthplace weighting - Annual-birth weighting samples countries in proportion to the dataset’s annual births. - Population weighting samples countries in proportion to the dataset’s population. - Equal-country weighting gives each included country an equal starting chance. - The included-country catalog and statistical estimates simplify the world; coverage is not a political or territorial claim. ## Units and missing values In the source data, pop is measured in thousands; im and u5 are rates per 1,000 births. The ppp field is an annual purchasing-power reference in international dollars. Missing happiness values remain null rather than being converted to zero. Purchasing-power comparisons are not live foreign-exchange conversions. Monetary presentation in the interface can vary by the selected display region. Reference statistics may use different source years and can include estimates. ## Statistics and fictional outcomes The age-specific mortality model adapts the reference project’s Gompertz–Makeham calibration. Language: English. ## Local game data Game progress and written reflections are stored in your browser for ordinary local play. Export a backup to move devices. Clearing site data or losing access to that browser can remove saves and publishing-ownership information. Game backups can contain written reflections and other content you entered. Treat exported files as personal files and share them only deliberately. This public reference never reads or publishes a visitor’s save. ## Optional public community content A life becomes public only when you choose to publish it. The selected summary, room or album information and public messages are stored in this site’s dedicated database and can be viewed by other visitors. Reflections are included only when selected for publication. The browser that publishes a memorial retains ownership information used for removal. Report unsuitable public content using the available controls or contact contact@1in8bn.com. Do not put private personal information into public content. ## Automatic cookieless analytics The site automatically sends cookieless usage statistics to PostHog and Google Analytics. There is no analytics Cookie banner. GA4 analytics storage and advertising storage remain denied; Google signals and advertising personalization are disabled. PostHog uses cookieless mode, without session recording or persistent person profiles. Analytics records page visits and selected usage events. Private save contents, written reflections and URL query parameters are not intentionally sent. Cookieless does not mean that no network information is processed: analytics services receive requests, and the PostHog proxy passes network information needed for its cookieless processing. Browser or extension blocking can prevent delivery. ## Player presence and support An anonymous browser session is counted for a short window, approximately two minutes, to display active-player presence. The feedback form sends your message, category, interface language and optional reply email through Resend to our Zoho support inbox. Game saves are not attached. Short-lived hashed request counters limit spam. You can also email contact@1in8bn.com directly with support, privacy or removal questions. This page describes the current product behavior and does not promise indefinite save retention or recovery. Characters and life events are fictional. Gentler and Classroom modes change aspects of play but do not guarantee the absence of difficult themes. The game cannot determine what will happen to a real person. ## Public sharing and conduct Publish only content you are comfortable making public. Do not publish personal information, abusive messages or unlawful content. Review the selected information before sharing a life, room, album or reflection. The service may limit or remove unsuitable community content. ## Saves, availability and browser support Keep exported backups of lives you want to retain. Local storage can be cleared or blocked, and importing replaces the lives on the destination device. Automatic synchronization and recovery of deleted local saves are not promised. Game behavior and available export formats can change. A modern browser with JavaScript is required; individual media capabilities vary. ## Embedding and attribution Public game pages support iframe embedding. Provide a direct link to 1in8bn.com so players can open it outside the embedded context. Storage and export behavior may differ inside an iframe.
